The Royal Mint is the only official mint for coinage produced for the United Kingdom.
Originating from the London Mint which was established in 886AD during the reign of Alfred the Great. The London Mint became the sole mint of Great Britain in the 16th Century and was situated in the Tower of London.
The advent of steam powered presses in the early 18th Century made it necessary to relocate the mint to larger premises. The mint was moved a short distance to Tower Hill.
It remained at Tower Hill until decimalisation in 1971 when it was again necessary to relocate.
The Royal Mint is now located in Llantrisant, South Wales.
